Within my family, as well as many others in the U.S., cultural traditions are dwindling. My family's feelings towards the traits of the "southsiders" were mostly negative if not mockery. They did not carry themselves in a proper manner. Though, most of these people were the same as me, ethnicity wise. They were the Mexicans that weren't Mexican enough to reside in Mexico. They were the American's that weren't American enough to walk without judgement. I was caught within a culture created of its own. I never wore cliche frilled colorful dresses as a child, and never bothered learning Spanish. Even as a child, I began to assimilate and conform to the traits of a well educated and behaved white child.
America's culture will always be in the molding hands of the whites. Depending on where one is, assimilation is a common factor in daily life. Many people assimilate without being aware, it is not so much a choice, but influence. The most obvious influence is the group which holds the largest power. America has become a nation of mixed people trying to transform into one. They are gradually becoming a group of people which can no longer exist due to the large mixture of culture. Assimilation has now become a paradox. It is a concept trying to be developed, even though it no longer truly can.
I agree! Those examples of mexican children and the language is so relateable. Good job.

DeleteI dissagree with " America's culture will always be in the molding hands of the whites", i think that who ever does the "molding" depends on how big the raise is, not necesarilly the whites.
ReplyDeleteThe very definition states that the superior race basically makes the rules. As much as I'd love for the larger race to shape the world, it will not. Sadly, many other cultures are not as greatly thought upon as whites.
